The One In Between
2017
Exhibition view, Unofficial Preview Gallery, Seoul, 2017
The One in Between is an interconnected installation that includes an immersive audiovisual experience, a one-off live performance, and a publication.
Presented at Unofficial Preview Gallery in Seoul, Korea, the work uses noise textures and sound layers, a restricted space and geometric shapes made of light to create an intimate, yet abstract inner terrain. The artwork explores the tensions between self-depreciating thinking, represented by boundaries formed by geometric lines, and the fluidity of emotions, symbolised by the element of “light”.
The installation employs material affectivity as the primary vector, putting it into tension with language. Silent written words appear on the walls of the room, mimicking the mental act of emotions becoming thoughts and creating a dialogue with the self. The narrative relies on a type of “memory reactivation”, where the remnants of past and forgotten loves act as a subterranean venom infiltrating the arteries of the self. Enveloped in a mental world, viewers progressively become “The One” individual trapped in the reminiscences of their hearts.
The live audio act, performed during the opening night, features the artist as “The One in Between” in a vulnerable sonic reenactment of her past memories and feelings. Positioned between the artwork and the audience, the artist acts as a physical bridge and sensorial catalyst for a shared intimate experience.
The publication, available for the spectators to take with them, comprises visuals and texts and is thought of as a material embodiment and memorial process of the affective entanglement with the artwork.

about
Charlène Dannancier is a French artist and composer who primarily works with sound, performance, installation, writing and film.
Her voice stands as the core element of her work, used as an instrument and aural narrative tissue, as well as a statement, engaging with autotheory practices.
Through her compositions and live performances, often embodied as her sensorial persona UNN, Dannancier crafts immersive and gripping encounters, guiding the audience along an intense trajectory that oscillates between the dimensions of intimate revelation and disquieting unease. Within this interplay, subjectivity, gender and power dynamics are interrogated, raising profound questions about the notions of consent, eroticism, control and vulnerability.
Her work has been presented and supported by Unofficial Preview Gallery (Seoul), De School (Amsterdam), Sandberg Instituut (Amsterdam), Het HEM (Zaandam), Sign+ (Groningen), OHM (Berlin), Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam), Transient Festival (Paris), Gwangju Media Art Festival (Gwangju), DOMMUNE (Tokyo), Frequent Defect (Lebanon), and more
